I built this project from an idea and at no idea at the time of the importance it would take. It’s incredible!
Kidscode, it’s above all else an active and passionate community. Without it, this educational project wouldn’t doable. The variety and complementarity of each member of the kidscode team is a real lever towards the constant and evolution development of our tool. We work together to bring students a different approach of education which, in our opinion, would be appealing and beneficial to them. ‘Helping prepare kids for the world of tomorrow’, such is our ambition.
Our project is built on the students’ implication in the game as well as on our collaboration with teachers, parents or others. We want to help students feel happier in their education, by learning the fun way. These values fall within the heart of our educational principles.
By themselves on in groups, the students must resort to the knowledge transmitted by the teacher in fun and concrete exercises centered on mathematics, physics, coding and many more subjects. They have the possibility to travel through time to discover ancient civilizations, historic monuments or different cultures; right from their screen.
For us, this is a real leap forward on an educational standpoint.
The idea of kidscode emerged as a result of a trip to the US during which Didier Plasse and Marc- Antoine Bar had the opportunity to visit a very peculiar school located in the Silicon Valley: Altschool. Having experienced their innovative technique which draws its inspiration from Montessori and Freinet methods, Didier and Marc-Antoine decided to provide educators across the globe with a digital tool that will enable children learn in a different way.
To see all these children blossom no matter their age in a school system that is entirely different from the one we know and that transmits strong values has reinforced the belief I had of creating and offering an alternative, innovative, accessible tool to schools all around the world. Kidscode was born.
The kidscode team is mainly made up of former teachers and other educational specialists. We have incorporated a number of YouTubers in the project and each of them is specialised in a specific aspect of ‘sandbox’ games. Finally, we also work in collaboration with a strong community of builders and gamers as well as open-world game enthusiasts.
Kidscode is the junction point where creators with a variety of compatible skills meet an active and passionate community.
By developing one of the most played type of game in the world (sandbox), kidscode wants to bring in a platform that is not only attractive to everyone but also offers an infinite range of possibilities which are easy to use and stimulates creativity and imagination. Kidscode platform allows children aged 5 to 15 years to address common educational subjects while subtly being introduced to coding and logic programming. Moreover, through regular updates, kidscode’s content available to teachers and students will frequently be revised to meet increasing demands and changes in the educational system.
We wanted kidscode to be a tool, to be extensive, intuitive, user-friendly with a scalable complexity. The objective is to offer a simple and ready-to-be-applied solution that can become a real asset in the long term.
In a world where the digital has more and more importance, video games have done much better than the movie industry to establish themselves as the number one cultural product and children have never played as much as they do today. Amongst the most progressive schools across the globe, many of them already use video games for educational purposes. Kidscode fits perfectly in this process and can easily be incorporated in cross-curriculum activities. With kidscode, educators not only allow their students to validate the knowledge provided by the curriculum but also to validate other skills such as creativity, imagination or teamwork.
Kidscode is the outcome of a study that combines several teaching alternatives, but it’s mainly a topical project and a future prospect with the ambition to prepare children from all over the globe to the world of tomorrow.
In his longest dialogue ‘The Laws’, Plato already recognized the value of games for children. At kidscode, we believe that game-based learning enables the child to discover some unexpected abilities such as self-control, determination, mutual respect, creativity or surpassing oneself.
In the United Kingdom, the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) has conducted a series of tests in several dozen primary and high-schools and came to the conclusion that video games increase children’s engagement in a distinctive way during most problem-solving situations.
At Kidscode, we are aware that not all teachers are familiar with video-games. Therefore, we have carefully designed a certain number of user guides and we have made a few introductory videos so that educators can start using our tool with ease.
Games are a major tool, acting both as a motivational factor that carries real meaning and allows the student to become more active and to be a major player during his/her learning process. Moreover, games are a powerful medium of communication that enhances interactions amongst students. Finally, games depict some cognitive benefits as they are capable of reinforcing the classification, ordination and the process of structuring space and time, which are essential to primary schools.
Project-based learning is connected to alternative teaching techniques and carries the teaching values advocated by Kidscode offering numerous advantages for the student.
Not only it helps the child developing a set of non-academic skills but our problem-solving situations enhance cognition, reasoning and decision-making skills as well as the ability to grasp difficult concepts. Moreover, through cooperative learning each student simultaneously increases his/her personal performance. Lastly, project-based learning brings out autonomy and initiative so that the pupil (or the kid) becomes aware of the effort that is required and develops a deeper understanding of his knowledge and previous accomplishments thus developing his motivation.
By committing to a project, students decide of its planification and realization; therefore they become players in their project and develop a certain autonomy. They acquire the necessary knowledge and concepts to carry out the project as well as skills that they could use in other contexts or problem-solving situations, whether they happen in school or in their everyday lives.
